Whitecourt Wolverines forward Travis Verbeek is the Pizza 73 AJHL Player of the Week after scoring three goals and six points in two games from February 5th-11th, 2024.
Travis Verbeek (2004) recorded two consecutive three-point games in two wins for the Wolverines to extend his active point streak, which now sits at five games and ten points. On February 9th, he scored the game winning goal in a three-point game (2G, 1A) to earn the Viterra AJHL Player of the Game award in a 4-1 win over the Bonnyville Pontiacs. The next night, he scored his league leading seventh game winning goal of the season and added two assists to defeat the visiting Calgary Canucks 4-2. Travis earned his second consecutive Viterra AJHL Player of the Game award in the win.
The University of Alaska-Anchorage (NCAA) commit is tied for fifth in the AJHL Scoring Race with 52 points (26G, 26A). This is his second Pizza 73 AJHL Player of the Week award.
The AJHL Defensive Player of the Week is Matthew Strilets of the Grande Prairie Storm. The 2003-born defenceman added to his four-game point streak with five points (1G, 4A) in three games last week.
On February 7th, Strilets scored a goal and an assist, including the overtime game winner in a 4-3 final over the Olds Grizzlys. The Storm were held to a single goal in a 4-1 loss to the Bonnyville Pontiacs on February 10th with Matthew recording an assist. Grande Prairie would return to the winning column on February 11th with a 3-2 decision over the visiting Drayton Valley Thunder and two assists for Strilets.
With 30 points (5G, 30 A), Matthew Strilets is tied for third in scoring among all AJHL defencemen.
Calgary Canucks forward Gavin Garland has been selected as the Inter Pipeline AJHL Rookie of the Week for the second time this season. The Nebraska-Omaha (NCAA) commit recorded four points (3G, 1A) in two games and was twice awarded as the Viterra AJHL Player of the Game.
Garland (2006) opened the week with an assist in a 4-2 loss to the visiting Drumheller Dragons on February 6th before exploding with his first AJHL hat trick and the game winning goal in a 4-0 shutout of the Drayton Valley Thunder. Garland is tied for third in rookie scoring with 35 points (15G, 20A).
