The selection committee of the 2016 RBC Cup Legacy Scholarship is pleased to announce the first class of recipients of the $1,000 scholarship towards post secondary education.
Kolten Anderson (Lloydminster, AB) is a long-time member of the local hockey system, spending time with the Bantam AAA Heat, Midget AAA Bobcats, Junior A Bobcats, and Bandits. Kolten is currently in his third year of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon.
Ryne Atkinson (Lloydminster, AB) played local hockey up until last year when he completed his minor hockey eligibility as a member of the Pacific Zone Champion Midget AAA Bobcats. Ryne is currently completing his Grade 12 at Lloydminster Comprehensive High School (LCHS), and has been accepted to the University of Alberta, University of Calgary, University of Saskatchewan, and Queens University for Engineering.
Kimberly Hughes (Lloydminster, AB) is a product of the Lloydminster Minor Hockey Association, including time with the Bantam AAA Ice Cats and the Midget AAA Steelers. Kimberly is currently in her second year at Morrisville State College (Morrisville, NY), where she competes with the NCAA Division III Mustangs hockey team and is working towards a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Performance and Health Promotion. She was named to her school’s President’s List in 2015-16 by maintaining a 4.0 GPA.
Austin Hunter (Lloydminster, AB) played minor hockey in his hometown of Lloydminster before moving to Spruce Grove to play for the AJHL’s Saints, while completing his high school education at LCHS. After finishing his junior career with the Saints in the spring of 2016, Austin enrolled at Red Deer College where he currently studies Business, and competes with the RDC Kings hockey team in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference.
Zac Giroux (Airdrie, AB) moved to Lloydminster to become a member of the Junior A Bobcats in 2014 after playing his minor hockey in Airdrie. Zac was a valuable member of the Bobcats organization for two seasons, including the RBC Cup run in 2016, and has opted to begin his education this year at the University of Alberta where he is ultimately planning to work towards a Master’s Degree in Physical Rehabilitation Medicine or Medicine.
We would like to thank all of the 13 applicants who applied for the scholarship this year, making the committee’s selection of five winners very difficult.
The RBC Cup Legacy Scholarship Fund was created with $60,000 in proceeds from the 2016 RBC Cup, and is intended to go towards up to five winners annually who were once a member of Lloydminster Minor Hockey and/or the Lloydminster Jr. A Bobcats. The scholarship is selected based on academics and community involvement, and the committee is comprised of a representative of the Junior A Bobcats (Trevor Redden – Business Manager), the Lloydminster Education Community (Scott Lumbard – Bobcats Education Director), and a member of the Lloydminster RBC Branch (Shaun Geurts – Market Manager).
MEDIA ADVISORY: Three of the scholarship recipients will be on hand at Sunday’s Bobcats game vs. the Spruce Grove Saints for a short pre-game ceremony. Media will have access to the recipients during the first intermission at ice level near the Bobcats dressing room.
