Whitecourt Wolverines Captain Colby Browne is the Pizza 73 AJHL Player of the Week following an eight-point (3G, 5A) road trip and two four-point games.
Browne (2003) and teammate Travis Verbeek led the AJHL with eight points last week coming out of a double header in Fort McMurray. Colby earned his ninth Viterra AJHL Player of the Game award on February 23rd with two goals and two assists in a 6-5 loss to the Oil Barons. The following night he recorded a goal and three assists in a 6-3 victory for Whitecourt.
The Wolverines forward is in his third and final AJHL season and is currently third in the AJHL Scoring Race with 63 points (25G, 38A). Browne and his Wolverines have clinched first place in the 2023-24 regular season and will hold the top seed throughout the 2024 Inter Pipeline AJHL Playoffs.
The AJHL Defensive Player of the Week is goaltender Jack Solomon who recorded two wins for the Lloydminster Bobcats from February 19th-25th and extended the team’s win streak to three games.
Solomon (2005) posted a 1.58 GAA and .952 save percentage over the week, allowing just three goals against and securing 60 saves in wins over the Drayton Valley Thunder and Camrose Kodiaks. Solomon has a league-leading five shutouts in his rookie season and is third overall in the AJHL with a .912 save percentage.
With just two games remaining in the regular season, the Bobcats are in a tight race for second place in the Canalta Hotels AJHL Standings.
Forward Simon Gaul of the Fort McMurray Oil Barons is the Inter Pipeline AJHL Rookie of the Week with six points (1G, 5A) in two games and is now third overall in rookie scoring with 38 points (20G, 18A).
Gaul (2004) added two assists in a 4-3 overtime loss on Family Day versus the Camrose Kodiaks. On February 23rd, Simon scored his second game winning goal of the season and earned the Viterra AJHL Player of the Game award with a season-high four-point (1G, 3A) game and 6-5 win over the Whitecourt Wolverines. His performance extended a four-game point streak to nine points.
