SUKOVIC, MORTENSEN AND BATTEN NAMED AS AJHL WEEKLY AWARD WINNERS

February 6th, 2024 – The Pizza 73 AJHL Player of the Week is Bonnyville Pontiacs centre Luka Sukovic.  The AJHL leading scorer added eight points (2G, 6A) in three wins for the Pontiacs from January 29th-February 4th, 2024.

Sukovic (2003) recorded his second four-point game of the season with four assists in a 6-2 road win in Fort McMurray on January 30th.  The Canmore Eagles travelled to Bonnyville on February 2nd with the Pontiacs taking a tight 3-2 win in a three-point (1G, 2A) game for Sukovic.  He continued his three-game point streak with his league leading 32nd goal of the season in a 6-2 win over the visiting Olds Grizzlys.

The Clarkson University (NCAA) commit leads the AJHL Scoring Race with 61 points in 51 games played.

Pontiacs teammate Billy Batten is the Inter Pipeline AJHL Rookie of the Week with a six-point (3G, 3A) performance in two games played.

On January 30th, Batten (2004) scored his first AJHL hat trick and recorded his second game winning goal as the Pontiacs defeated the Oil Barons. The rookie forward was also awarded as the Viterra AJHL Player of the Game for his four-point night (3G, 1A).  Billy added two assists to his weekly total on February 2nd versus the Grizzlys and is now tied for second among all AJHL rookies with 33 points (7G, 26A).

Canmore Eagles defenceman Brody Mortensen is the AJHL Defensive Player of the Week with five points (2G, 3A) in two road games last week.

Mortensen (2004) started a three-game road trip with an assist in Bonnyville versus the Pontiacs on February 2nd.  He recorded a career-high four-point game on February 4th in Camrose with two goals and two assists for the Eagles in a 6-4 loss.  Brody was awarded as the Viterra AJHL Player of the Game.

 Mortensen has doubled his point total from last season with 30 points (12G, 18A) and is fourth overall among AJHL defencemen.  This is the second AJHL Defensive Player of the Week award for the Lindenwood University (NCAA) commit.
