Trey Funk Commits to Canisius College Golden Griffins

The Bonnyville Pontiacs are excited to announce our third NCAA player commitment this week.

Forward Trey Funk has committed to the NCAA Division I Canisius College Golden Griffins. He will join teammate Matteo Giampa who announced his commitment to the same school on Thursday.

The (“˜02) born forward from Redwood Meadows, Alberta is in his second season with the Pontiacs. In 52 games this year, he has earned 14 goals and 22 assists.

“It’s very exciting,” said Trey Funk on the commitment. “Last year I didn’t really expect to get to the point where I am now, but it’s very exciting. Especially having another guy coming with me, it makes it extra special. I’m excited to move up.”

Trey Funk becomes the 105th Pontiac player committed to play college hockey since the 2013/14 season. Funk is also the 10th current player to receive an NCAA commitment on this year’s roster.

“Trey Funk is one of those rare players that came to our organization looking for an opportunity and nothing else,” said Head Coach and General Manager Rick Swan.

“He wants nothing more than to earn his way everyday and is an individual that takes full advantage of every resource that we provide our players to get better each and every single day. Trey works his tail off at everything and soaks up direction and coaching which is why it’s easy to see that he does things right both on and off the ice all the time,” continued Swan.

“Trey comes from an excellent, supportive family and he is a player that can out right fly and he will be a player at the next level that has the ability to play with speed, tempo and pace to drive play. Canisius is getting a leader that will continue to develop and be a culture enhancer for their dressing room and program.”

The Golden Griffins play out of the Lecom Harborcenter which is the official practice facility of the Buffalo Sabres. The Bonnyville Pontiacs are thrilled to see the dedication Trey Funk puts into his craft and this announcement is well-deserved.
